In 1888, The Century Club of California was established in San Francisco by one hundred and eleven active, forward-looking women from the Bay Area. Mrs. George Hearst (Phoebe Apperson) was the first President and a strong guiding force during the organization's early years. Miss Sarah Dix Hamlin, an outstanding advocate of education for women, was a charter member of the group. The club's objective was then, as it remains today, to offer a forum for the free expression of ideas and for the purpose of enriching the intellectual and cultural lives of women. During its first year, CCC members met in private homes; subsequent meetings were held in a rented Victorian mansion on Sutter Street near Polk. In 1903 these women decided to build their own clubhouse, and in 1904 incorporated for that purpose, sold building bonds, and purchased a large residential building and lot on the southwest corner of Franklin and Sutter Streets. Completed in 1905, our Colonial style building was designed by noted Bay Area architect, Henry A. Schulze. Among its many unique and handsome features are three stunning interior floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows by artist Bruce Porter. Several areas of the building, including our domed ballroom auditorium, were later remodeled in 1912 with assistance of renowned architect and club member Julia Morgan.
The Century Club of California Club house facilities are available to rent for weddings, private dinners, recitals, weekly meetings, and business or social events, with or without the use of kitchen facilities.
